A three-day visit by the Meghalaya State Education Commission (MSEC) to Garo Hills concluded today, with North Garo Hills being the last stop on the itinerary.
Today’s meeting saw a thorough assessment of the educational scenario of the district.
The commission, headed by chairperson SM Sungoh, in the presence of Education Department official Ambrose Ch Marak and former Union Public Service Commission Chairman David R Syiemlieh along with other co-opted members and officials of MSEC, met the principals of various secondary and higher secondary schools of NGH as well as the Principal of Mendipathar College, which is the lone college in the district.
The MSEC members urged the educational heads to air issues, grievances and suggestions for recommendation to higher levels. The heads of various educational institutions while giving their representation in black and white also suggested that the institutions be properly inspected by the concerned authority and address their impending issues such as inefficient infrastructure, unfilled staff, insufficient fund sanction, etc.
During the discussion, most of the school principals’ cited a dire need for upgrades of infrastructure.
NGH Additional Deputy Commissioner, Jude RT Sangma, opined that the poor academic performances of the students could be attributed to long winter holidays coupled with festivities, which, according to him, makes the students lax. Sangma therefore suggested that the academic calendar be altered.
The MSEC officials pressed the educational heads to focus more on teacher improvisation, conduct teacher orientation programmes, depute one teacher from each school to undertake a counseling programme and diagnose learning problems of students.
