The state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) feels that election campaigning in Meghalaya is experiencing a worsening of quality, with the general public suffering as a result.
State BJP spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang, said that campaigning for Meghalaya’s two Lok Sabha seats was more about calling rival candidates names than reaching out to the people.
“You are left with very little time to tell the public what you are going to do when you are elected,” Kharkrang said.
The BJP did not contest either the Shillong or Tura seats, with the party leadership instead deciding to support the candidates of its National People’s Party (NPP) ally.
Lamenting that the public are not clear as to what these competing political parties and their candidates are going to do in the interest of the state when they are elected, Kharkrang added that the campaigning was all about talking ill against each other.
“Some of them are talking about corruption but tell us how you are going to get rid of corruption,” Kharkrang questioned, adding that the public deserves a better response from these political parties.
