Teachers under the banner of the All Garo Hills SSA School Teachers’ Association (AGHSSASTA) today held a sit-in demonstration in Tura to protest against the non-release of their five months pending salaries.
The teachers, after the protest, submitted a reminder petition on their demands to Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma through the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner’s office.
The teachers, through the petition expressed their sadness over their plight and how they have been struggling to make ends meet.
“While other states have received salaries, teachers in Meghalaya have to build the nation on empty stomachs,” they said.
Further the teachers added that if the situation continued, enrolment in SSA schools would definitely drop which could lead to schools being closed down due to lack of students.
They further reiterated their demand for the release of all five months salaries at once, which they asked to be paid prior to Christmas.
