Shillong, Mar 8: Various sports events were held today on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
The office of the My Bharat Kendra in East Garo Hills in collaboration with the District Sports Office, district administration and Khelo India Centre, organised a one day ASMITA Football League and Tug of War for women at the artificial turf of Rongrenggre Govt Higher Secondary School playground.
Ruby Balkambe R Sangma, Block Development Officer (BDO), Dambo-Rongjeng C&RD Block, was the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, she highlighted the importance of celebrating International Women’s Day, emphasizing this year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” which aims to foster a more equitable, inclusive, and thriving society by empowering women.
Linda BK Sangma, Joint Director of My Bharat Kendra, Williamnagar, delivered the welcome and keynote address.
Teams from various institutions participated in the football league and tug of war, including Khelo India Centre, Rangmal Badim Women’s Group, Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, Williamnagar Govt. College, Rongrenggre Model Deficit Higher Secondary School, and Greenyard Higher Secondary School.
Williamnagar Govt. College won the tug of war, defeating Rongrenggre Model Deficit Higher School, while Khelo India Centre emerged victorious in the football league, defeating Williamnagar Govt. College in the final.
In Ri-Bhoi, the Khelo India Centre (KIC) at St Alfred’s Hr Sec School Marngar and Mera Yuva Bharat Ri-Bhoi organised Athletics competitions for women (100m race, 200m race, 400m race) across the age groups of U-13, 13-18 years, 18-plus and women categories and Tug of War Group event yesterday at Marngar Sports Complex, Ri-Bhoi.
The winners in 100m race were (18+ cat) Unity Rado, Daplang Makri, Wonti Sylliang; (13-18 yrs cat) Lisha Lapang, Sibilda Maring, Wilka Rongpeit; (U-13 cat) Sara Bongrung, Banrika Mahjong, Nabashisha Lyngdoh; (women cat) Sompa Mahjong, Sumi Amsi, Regina Damlong respectively.
The winners in 200m race were (18+ cat) Unity Rado, Daplang Makri, Sabina Jynthem; (13-18 yrs cat) Sibilda Maring, Lisha Lapang, Laiasukika Syiem, (U-13 cat) Sara Bongrung, Genevieve Klein, Nabashisha Lyngdoh; (women cat) Regina Damlong, Sumi Amsi, Welda Lyngdoh respectively.
All the winners across events and categories were felicitated and awarded medals and certificates by the dignitaries. The ASMITA Athletics League was participated by over 400 women, youths and girls across various events and age-groups.
