The CEO of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) has informed all residents of the Greater Shillong Planning Area that manual cleaning of septic tanks is prohibited as per provisions of the Employment of Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act 2013.
It also advised against availing cleaning services from unauthorised persons. Instead, the SMB provides desludging of all septic tanks within the Greater Shillong area and the general public can book appointments over the phone on 8787842656.
Within the SMB area septic tanks of 6,000 litres capacity are charged Rs 7,600 per trip. The rate differs for 3,000 litre tanks (Rs 4,500 per trip) and 1,000 litres (Rs 2,800 per trip.
Outside the SMB area but within Greater Shillong the rates are Rs 12,600 per trip for 6000 litres, Rs 7,500 per trip for 3,000 litres and Rs 3,400 for 1,000 litres.
For areas outside Greater Shillong an additional Rs 50 per kilometre will be charged.
