Ka Sur Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep, a group demanding justice for the killing of ex-HNLC general secretary Cherishsterfield Thangkhiew, during a police raid on August 13 organised a sit-in-demonstration at Malki ground today.
Speaking during the sit-in-demonstration, Ka Sur Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep, general secretary, Marbud Dkhar said that the group is not involved in politicking.
“There is no politics, there are no flags but it is the voice of the masses,” Dkhar said while addressing those present at the sit-in-demonstration.
It may be mentioned that there has been accusation from certain quarters that the group was politically motivated.
On the arrest of five youths for their alleged involvement in planting an IED in front of the office of the National People’s Party (NPP) on October 4, Dkhar said that the group will not allow the police or the government to randomly arrest anyone.
He also said that from the beginning, Sur Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep has been protesting for justice to the family of Thangkhiew in a democratic way and in the future, they are going to intensify their agitations.
Later speaking to media persons at the protest site, Dkhar alleged that police arrested the five youths on mere suspicion.
According to Dkhar, the families of the youths fear that the same thing may happen to them like what happened to the ex-HNLC general secretary.
“The arrested youths’ families are scared that similar fate (killing of Thangkhiew by police) may befall on their sons considering the fact that police had similar suspicion against him planting an IED,” Dkhar said.
Donboklang Kharlyngdoh, member of the Ka Sur Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep condemned the arrest of the five youths.
“We came to know from the elders that the boys are innocent,” Kharlyngdoh said.
He said that some of the youths were daily wage earners.
It may be mentioned that the group organised the sit-in-demonstration to demand the suspension of the police officers involved in the raid on the residence of Thangkhiew.
