Shillong, Feb 10:The 87th meeting of the Brahmaputra Board was held today under the chairmanship of Ranbir Singh in Shillong.
The meeting was attended by members comprising senior officials from the central and state governments of all the North East states and West Bengal and focused on reviewing ongoing programmes and discussing strategic initiatives related to integrated water resources management, flood and erosion control and institutional strengthening in the Brahmaputra and Barak River basins.
The decisions taken in the 83rd meeting of the standing committee of Brahmaputra Board held on January 30 and February 7, were ratified and project proposals concerning comprehensive assessment of riverbank erosion and prioritisation of mitigation strategies for the Brahmaputra River basin were approved.
The board also approved the detailed allocation of budget estimate and annual action plan of Brahmaputra Board for 2026-27.
Presentations on the status of handing over of completed projects carried out by Brahmaputra Board and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for preparation of master plans were made for appraisal of the members.
It was also decided to include three master plans viz – Dibang-Disang, Noa- Dihing and Rangit master plans totalling the number of master plans identified by Brahmaputra Board to 76.
Members from state governments shared the action taken on decisions made in the review meeting on December 12 and the visit to Majuli river island on December 10. The members from state governments also discussed schemes taken up in their respective states.
The next board meeting, the 88th, will be held in Guwahati.
