Residents of Shella led by the Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) today came out to protest against power cuts in the area.
With the traditional dongmusa (flambeaus) the people also burnt effigies of the MDA 2 government and the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited to show their anger against incessant long-days power cut.
HYC, Shella area unit Vice President, Bantyngshain Natep said repeated pleas with the corporation remain unheard. He said power cut in Shella is an annual affair during the monsoons and the village reels under darkness for days and even weeks.
Members of the Sengkmie, elders of the village, HYC general secretary Roy Kupar Synrem also joined the protest. During the meeting, Rangbah Shnong Readerforce Sarubai assured the dorbar’s support to the HYC to settle the issue with the authorities.
Synrem slammed the government for not heeding to the misery faced by the people of Shella. He said there has been continuous power cut in the area and nothing has changed for many years.
