Shillong, Mar 23: A place once known for its pristine beauty and tranquility is now facing criticism from visitors. Laitlum Canyon, one of Meghalaya’s most popular tourist destinations, appears to be losing some of its charm partly due to its growing popularity.
A tourist-centric activity – pony rides – come with a problem of their own, namely the excrement generated by the animals. Many tourists have complained about the animal waste and the accompanying smell, which has negatively affected their overall experience.
A tourist from Maharashtra said he had visited Laitlum about five years ago and remembered it as a peaceful spot where visitors could enjoy nature. “Now, one cannot even find peace of mind,” he said, pointing to the noise and crowding as major concerns. He also noted that recent construction activities have altered the landscape, adding that such developments disrupt the natural view.
Two other female tourists from Delhi expressed disappointment over the condition of the site, stating that despite the presence of dustbins, plastic waste and animal droppings were visible. One also criticised the use of loud music, calling it unnecessary in a place known for its serenity.
When contacted, an official associated with the management of the site, who declined to be named, said that pony operators have been instructed to clean up animal waste but he admitted that compliance has been inconsistent.
The official further stated that formal guidelines have not yet been put in place due to ongoing construction work. He added that once the development is complete, ponies and horses will not be allowed inside the Sipro Park area at Laitlum Canyon.
