Mawsynram MLA Himalaya Shangpliang today declined to comment on his future party loyalties.
Shangpliang was elected to the Assembly for the first time in 2018 on a Congress Party ticket but was then part of last year’s mass defection to the Trinamool Congress.
Recently, rumours have abounded that Shangpliang would quit the TMC in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Last week, many of his supporters in Mawsynram joined the BJP.
When asked if he is planning to switch parties as speculation continues to grow, he said that he cannot comment on this and maintained that he is still a TMC legislator.
He also told Highland Post that the people from Mawsynram who joined the BJP were made up from a cross-section of society and were not all his supporters.
“Those who have joined the BJP that day are not solely my supporters but a blend of supporters of different political parties who came to Shillong under somebody’s leadership and I have nothing to do or have the knowledge about it,” he added.
