A 17-year old girl who was living at a government-run shelter home died by suicide at the premises today.
The teenager hanged herself in one of the spare rooms of the shelter home. The matter came to light at about 10:30 am.
Source said the girl had endured a horrifying ordeal last November when she was sexually assaulted by her own uncle. A case was registered at the Mawngap police station.
For her safety, she was under the care of the child welfare committee, which later arranged for her accommodation at the shelter home.
According to the police a magisterial inquest has been conducted and the post mortem was done at NEIGRIHMS. East Khasi Hills police has since registered an unnatural death report and investigation is to find out the circumstances that led to the suicide.
It is also learnt that the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) has also taken up the case.
