The investigation into the death of a 13-year-old girl from Madanrting by electrocution will be conducted by senior electrical inspectors.
Stating that the incident was outside the sub-station and not in the substation, an assistant executive engineer said that such electrical accidents are looked at by the senior electrical inspectors of the government and reports have been sent to them.
When asked what steps have been taken in the meantime to prevent any further untoward incident, he said that the power supply in the area has been cut-off.
The victim was electrocuted after washing clothes in a stream near her home. The electrocution was on October 25 and she died two days later of her injuries.
Madanrting currently faces acute water shortages and families often have to resort to paying for private water tankers to supply them. This explains why residents still have to wash their clothes in rivers.
Speaking to Highland Post recently, the victim’s aunt, Evanghlyne Syiem, said that the location is close to a transformer and that several people who were also washing clothes in the water at the time felt a current and raised the alarm.
The girl, however, could not escape the current and she was rescued by a man who bravely pulled her out of the stream.
The officer in charge of Madanrting police station had informed HP that an inquiry has been constituted by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL) and only after it is complete will the whole truth into the incident be known.
