NPP MDC from Gasuapara, Sengchim N Sangma was elected as the new chairman of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) after he defeated Rongrong MDC Rinaldo Ninja K Sangma of the Trinamool Congress in an election held for the post today.
The post has been empty since Rakesh Sangma resigned to contest (and win) the Chief Executive Member position. However, Rakesh was forced to resign after intense protests across the Garo Hills.
Sengchim got 18 votes out of the total of 30. The TMC MDC was able to secure only 12 votes.
Following Sengchim’s victory, NPP MDCs along with the ruling alliance including BJP MDC Pramod Koch visited the grave of Purno A Sangma at the Roman Catholic Cemetery at RC Road to pay their respect as well as floral tribute.
Meanwhile, NPP-led alliance has nominated MDC from Siju constituency Albinush Marak to be the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) to head the coalition after Rakesh’s announcement to step down from CEM’s post.
