The District Magistrate of West Jaiñtia Hills, Garod LSN Dykes, has issued a notice under Section 144 of the CrPC to ban the authorised mining of sand within the district.
Sand mining can only be carried out by individuals or organisations that have obtained quarry permits or mining leases from the government and these can only be issued once environmental clearance under the Environment Protection Act 1986 has been received.
Illegally mined sand and the tools, equipment and vehicles used in its extraction can be seized by the authorities.
The order was dated May 13.
