South Shillong MLA, Sanbor Shullai has sought a recommendation from Governor Phagu Chauhan for development of Lady Kerr Welfare Centre (Red Cross Hospital), Laban under the PM-DevINE scheme.
Shullai, who met with the Governor, said that the centre is the oldest hospital catering to the needs of the poor and the centre can consider its development under the scheme as the top priority with special focus of Maternity and Child care.
He said the centre has been occupied by the IRCS and Lady Kerr Welfare since 1920, and the structure which is more than 100 years old, is in a dilapidated condition and is beyond repair. “In order to make the complex equipped with the much needed common basic infrastructure it is imperative to develop the entire structure with modernised tools, equipment and blood banks,” he said.
In line with the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the establishment relentlessly aspires to inspire, encourage and initiate all forms of humanitarian activities to minimise human suffering and contributes to create a congenial climate for peace, Shullai added.
