The East Jaiñtia Hills District Magistrate has prohibited sale of Nitrazepam tablets to the general public by the pharmacies/ drug stores without proper medical prescription with immediate effect across the district.
In an order issued under section 144 CrPC on September 7, the district magistrate said that illicit trafficking of the hypnotic pharmaceutical drug by the commercial name Nitrazepam tablet may have a deleterious impact on the general health of the public, and therefore the sale needs to be closely monitored and controlled to prevent any misuse of the drug.
The order further said that attempts to transport/supply Nitrazepam drug within any group(s) without proper permit/permission or relevant document issued by the Government will be subject to legal action.
