Voice of the People Party president and Nongkrem MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit has said that the Rs 10 lakh given to MLAs as discretionary grant (DG) is not enough to fulfill the medical exigencies of every family in a constituency.
“This DG has been given to each MLA when any constituents need it in time of medical or other emergencies. But … this is not enough in a year for the people of the constituency,” Basaiawmoit said during the distribution of MLA scheme for the year 2023-24 for his constituency. Basaiawmoit publicly released the MLA scheme worth Rs 2.50 crore and Rs 3 lakh under the Intensive Sports and Youth Development Programme yesterday.
He said that this Rs 10 lakh per year as DG is giving the legislators sleepless nights since it is not enough to meet the emergencies of constituents. The VPP chief said that the house of a legislator is not a place where the public will come asking for money to foot their medical bills but the government should provide better healthcare.
He also said that there are certain people who are misleading the public against the VPP on the issue of DG, accusing it of misusing the funds, since they are scared that the party will rule the state in 2028 as well as win the district council elections in KHADC and JHADC.
