With the aim of sensitising the public of Eastern West Khasi Hills on issues concerning road safety, an awareness campaign on the theme ‘Road Safety-Safety to Life’ was today organised by the office of the District Transport Officer, which was attended by government officials as well as commercial drivers and local residents.
Impressing upon drivers for the need to adhere to traffic rules and regulations for the safety of passengers and pedestrians, Deputy Superintendent of Police D Moksha called upon them to strictly follow all safety norms while driving in order to avoid accidents while also stressing on the different punitive measures for traffic violations, such as speeding, overloading, driving without seatbelts or helmets, driving under the influence, etc.
Representing the Health Department, Dr ES Lakiang, dwelt at length on different aspects of administering first aid to accident victims before they are taken to healthcare facilities for further treatment, while Public Works Department Assistant Executive Engineer K Rymbai spoke on road signage and the need to strictly follow these in the interest of the safety and security of passengers and pedestrians alike.
Others who spoke during the programme were the headman of Lumsohkhlur village D Kharmawlong and District Transport Officer W Makdoh, who presided over the function.
