Former Lawban-Mawprem MDC Ricky Shullai has announced that he will run for the seat again in the 2025 KHADC election, this time as an independent.
Shullai had won the seat in 2014 on a Nationalist Congress Party ticket. That party’s Meghalaya unit has since all but disappeared, however, and Shullai switched allegiance to the United Democratic Party for 2019 but lost to Mitchell Wankhar. At that time Wankhar was in the National People’s Party (NPP) but later resigned and is now a UDP man. Left with few other options, Shullai has now chosen to run as an independent.
Shullai made the announcement on Friday at a public meeting held at his residence.
Addressing the gathering, he said that the delimitation that was carried out for district council constituencies is a blessing as through the delimitation process, Upper Lumparing also now falls under Laban-Mawprem; it had earlier been under the Malki-Laitumkhrah constituency.
He also informed that after several consultations and meetings with his supporters, it was decided that he should contest as an independent candidate.
