Nongpoh, Nov 11: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today inaugurated new classrooms at Ri Bhoi Synod College, Umsaitsning, constructed under the CMSDF 2025-2026 at Rs 23.72 lakhs.
Speaking during the inauguration, Sangma said investment in roads, buildings and infrastructures become meaningless without investing in human capital.
He highlighted the government’s investment in education, mentioning the support to 4172 private schools aiding 65 per cent salaries of teachers, which according to him surpass all other North Eastern states.
The Chief Minister expressed concern over multiple categorisation of schools and said it is complicated and one of the core of problems in the education sector. He said the government is trying to solve the problems including rationalisation of teachers without hampering their livelihoods.
Referring to higher levels of education and colleges, the Chief Minister said that the government spends about Rs 120 crore in giving salaries to private colleges. He also stated that most of these colleges are centred in Shillong but colleges are also needed in the rural areas and spoke about the concept of People’s Colleges across the state especially in those areas where there are no colleges and at the grass roots level.
Also present during the occasion were Minister of Community & Rural Development Sosthenes Sohtun and Umsning MLA Dr Celestine Lyngdoh among others.
