To support the protest of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislators in New Delhi, members of the party gathered in Ri-Bhoi to make their voices heard as well against the border deal that Meghalaya signed earlier this year with Assam.
The demonstration was held at Maikhuli village, one of the sites disputed between the two states. Residents of the village are unhappy with the agreement as it divides the village land, with some property, including a fish pond that residents depend upon for their livelihoods, set to go to Assam under the deal.
TMC leaders present included James Lyngdoh, Dr Saralin Dorphang, Gilbert Nongrum and Bansharai Pyngrope, among others.
The protestors also demanded that the Khasi and Garo languages be included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
