Three people accused of the kidnap and murder of a 14-year-old boy in Ri-Bhoi last year, as well as the family members of the victim, today slammed the district police for their “wrongful arrest” in the case.
The three accused – Anthai K Marak of Umdem village, Paulus R Marak and Jakaeus Ch Marak (both of Nakrabil village) – claimed that the police conducted a shoddy investigation after which the trio were arrested and had to spend three months in jail.
On December 4, 2019 the teenager was kidnapped from Nakrabil and held for ransom, with the kidnappers demanding Rs 1 crore for his release. The family was unable to pay up and on December 16 the boy’s body was recovered.
At a press conference today, the three accused named those who they say were really responsible for the heinous crime.
“We want justice and condemn Ri-Bhoi police for not arresting the main culprits. Most of the culprits who were involved in the kidnap and murder case are still in the village while two of them have absconded,” they said.
The father of the victim, Monu Arengh, agreed that the wrong people had been arrested by police and demanded that justice be done, both for the boy who was murdered and the three who were allegedly falsely accused.
