A woman farmer from Ri Bhoi district, stood near the main entrance of the Main Secretariat here today protesting against the dilapidated condition of the Nongpoh -Umden-Sonapur road.
Bindas Syiem of Umden village was holding a placard identifying herself and that she is demanding the rights of the people. She threatened to fast until death if the government does not respond to her demand.
Talking reporters she said that the protest was to secure repair of the Nongpoh -Umden-Sonapur road that has worn out for several years now.
She said there have been repeated false promises made during elections. “Both the winners and losers in elections have promised to build this road, but their promises turned out as lies. I am extremely frustrated, having personally endured many difficulties because of the condition of this road. Therefore, I believe I have every right to demand a better road,” Syiem added.
Syiem stated that though it is the responsibility of the government of the day to take up the matter, she had met with the executive engineer of PWD (Roads) and written to the deputy commissioner on the matter, but was not satisfied with their response.
