The boundary committee for Ri-Bhoi sector is waiting for a meeting with its counterpart from Assam to discuss settlement of the border dispute in four disputed areas including for a joint inspection of these areas.
Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem who is the member of the Regional Committee of Ri-Bhoi today said that the committee is waiting for its counterpart in Assam to fix a date for the meeting and even spot inspection to the disputed sectors.
Informing that a meeting between the two regional committees was cancelled by the Assam Regional Committee last year, Syiem pointed out that the committee requires thorough discussion to settle the dispute.
“We are doing our job in getting first hand information about the sentiments of the people in these disputed areas,” Syiem told media persons here.
Admitting that resolving the boundary dispute is a big challenge, he asked the people of the disputed areas to cooperate with the committee “as there will be merits and de-merits” in the process.
It may be mentioned that the second phase of talks between Assam and Meghalaya to resolve the remaining six disputes in Ri-Bhoi, West Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills, has slowed down and there has been hardly any meeting at the chief minister level lately.
