Following a recent public disturbance that threatened to take on a communal colour, the officials from the district administration of Ri-Bhoi met their counterparts from West Karbi Anglong district from Assam today at Sabuda for a peace meeting.
Recently, three Khasi youth were assaulted at Jatalong village. Officials have been at pains to stress that the disturbance was not an ethnic conflict but one due to personal grievances. Officials from the two states, including police officers, met at Sabuda to ensure that peace and harmony are maintained in the disputed Block 2 area.
Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Arpit Upadhyaya told this reporter that close contacts between the two districts are key to maintaining peace.
Meanwhile, based on a complaint that Assam police are not allowing the public to come to Mawlasnai for shopping and other purposes, Upadhyaya said that, though no official complaint has been received by the district administration, he raised the matter with the West Karbi Anglong authorities.
