The Ri-Bhoi District Magistrate has placed a ban, using her powers under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), against overloaded vehicles using the Dwar Ksuid Bridge in Umroi on the Shillong Bypass.
In an order today, the District Magistrate said that the bridge has been constructed for 70R loading (meaning that a 70 tonne rolling load may cross the bridge) but overloaded vehicles have been plying on the bridge, which could cause it to collapse.
On October 7 a concerned citizen, Kronding Nongbsap, lodged a complaint with the district administration after becoming concerned about the safety of the bridge after noticing that the surface of the bridge had become uneven and there appear to be cracks on the supports under the bridge.
