In a brazen show of VIP culture, Rangsakona MLA Subir R Marak slapped a caretaker of the MBOSE Guest House in Laitumkhrah here, after he allegedly took time to open the gate.
In a video that has now gone viral, the NPP MLA was seen approaching the caretaker and slapping him across the face. The caretaker did not react while another person led the legislator away after the slap, though he again returned to lashing and shouting for several minutes before a man arrived in a scooty.
The incident reportedly happened on July 16 at around 2 am.
No FIR has been filed in this regard but the MLA’s attack on the caretaker has come under strong criticism on social media.
Police sources said that the caretaker did not want to press charges and that the MLA had apologised.
In a statement Subir Marak claimed that he had booked the guest house to accommodate a teachers’ delegation from Garo Hills who had come to meet with the Education Minister.
“I had invited them for dinner to my residence and after dinner I personally came to drop them to the guest house. Reached at 2 AM and waited there for half an hour blowing a siren and horn and my PSO climbed over the wall to wake the Chowkidar,” he stated.
He accused the caretaker’s wife (not seen in the video) of “talking very rudely” and therefore gave the man “a mild slap”.
The MLA was regretful of his act and said, “I should not have done being a public representative. It happened in the heat of the moment and I had asked for an apology to the chowkidar,” he said.
“I have in fact asked for an apology from the chowkidar. But despite apologies, they made the video viral, which should not have been done. This is unfair and a breach of privilege of an elected member,” the MLA stated.
