Rampant littering is threatening some of Meghalaya’s most beautiful destinations and tourist spots.
Kyllang Rock, a huge dome of red granite, around 11 kilometres from Mairang is facing such a threat.
Unfortunately it is local tourists who are guilty of unabashed littering that is putting the tourist spot in a very bad light, especially when visitors from outside the state arrive.
Taking cognizance of the matter, the Dorbar Shnong of Mawsmai Kyllang today announced that they have decided to prohibit drinking and cooking in the area so that cleanliness is maintained.
The Sordar of Mawsmai Kyllang, H Lyngdoh Mawnai, said, “The tourists coming here should bear in mind that they can no longer cook food in this place. They can bring their homemade or packed food and make doubly sure that they carry all the waste with them when they leave.”
Informing that the Dorbar Shnong and the Kyllang clan have also decided that no tourists will be allowed to drink in this spot, he said, “There is rampant littering of broken liquor bottles, plastic waste, etc and use of filthy language by the inebriated and it a matter of great shame when people from other states and abroad get to witness such poor environmental practice by our people.”
Visitors are also prohibited from climbing the rock or parking their vehicles in the area after 4 pm in winter and 5 pm in summer.
