Thousands of black flags, banners and placards were displayed during a protest rally by the residents of the Nongpoh area and pressure groups that was taken out to condemn the recent murder of a young woman by her partner at Pahamsyiem village, Ri-Bhoi.
The murder of the 19-year-old woman took place on Monday.
The rally began at Iewmawlong village and ended at Nongpoh’s MUDA Complex. It was organised by four pressure groups and supported by the Dorbar Shnong of Iewmawlong, women’s groups, youths, etc.
Police were on hand to ensure that law and order was maintained. The protestors demanded the strictest punishment for the accused, who was arrested by police soon after the crime was committed.
A candlelight vigil was held at the end of the protest in front of the MUDA Complex.
