The elderly woman, whose legs were literally shredded to the bone in a horrific accident yesterday in Purakhasia lost her life last evening while she was being taken to Tura for medical treatment.
The death of the woman in the incident later led to furious residents burning down the vehicle, a dumper truck in retaliation with tensions running high in the area.
Various resident groups of the region have been demanding a stop to the running of dumper trucks through the road unless provisions were put in place for safety and vehicle checks were done through authorized government departments.
Following the accident, a police team reached the spot and took custody of the driver as well as the dumper after the incident.
Angry residents however refused to hand over the dumper truck and after a ruckus with the police burnt the vehicle down.
The situation was later diffused after the arrival of forces. The situation in Purakhasia, though tense, is said to be normal.
The victim, as per police sources is yet to be identified with her age being speculated to be around 70.
“The lady passed away yesterday. We have registered a case of murder against the driver involved,” said superintendent of police, Vivekananda Singh.
The incident comes in the wake of another two such accidents, which left a 5 year old and another youth dead. Incidentally all these accidents occurred very close to each other near Purakhasia.
