ICAR-CIFRI (Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute) Regional Centre Guwahati in collaboration with Meghalaya’s Department of Fisheries organised a one day awareness-cum-input distribution programme yesterday to popularise ornamental fisheries and aquarium fish in state schools, particularly in East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi.
The programme was organised at the Meghalaya State Fisheries Research and Training Institute, Mawpun, Ri-Bhoi, in which 25 schools from East Khasi Hills and 25 from Ri-Bhoi participated under the chairmanship of SK Majhi, Principal Scientist and Head of ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati.
The programme encompassed discussions and demonstrations on ornamental fisheries with speeches on the importance of ornamental fisheries from experts Pronob Das, Simanku Borah and A Kakati.
Encouragement to schools on vocational ornamental fish-keeping from state officials MA Khongjliw, PS Suting and P Lyngdoh and highlighting the various resources on ornamental fish and the need for sustainable development, entrepreneurship and conservation was also a part of the awareness programme.
The programme concluded with the distribution of complete aquarium sets to all the schools that participated in the programme.
