In a bid to promote muga and eri silk production in Ri-Bhoi, the Regional Muga Research Station of the Central Silk Board, in collaboration with the District Sericulture Office, organised a ‘Vanya Resham Krishi Mela’ here.
The event saw participation from hundreds of silk farmers, with Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem acting as the chief guest.

Speaking at the occasion, Syiem emphasised the importance of fostering collaboration between muga farmers and scientists to enhance silk production in the region. He highlighted the significance of scientific methods in silk production and urged for a coordinated approach to bridge the gap between farmers and experts.
Furthermore, he called for the protection of local silk products, suggesting the implementation of a Geographical Indication (GI) tag to authenticate the origin and quality of muga and eri silk from Ri-Bhoi.
The event also featured an exhibition showcasing various silk products and the release of a booklet on muga silkworm rearing and seed production. Awards were then distributed to local progressive farmers for their contributions to muga silk production.
The programme concluded with a technical session addressing challenges in muga farming, where a team of scientists from the Central Silk Board provided insights and solutions to enhance silk farming practices in the region.
