The Khasi Students Union and HNYF yesterday visited Rongkum Amlympiang village and stopped construction of the international border fencing work in the area.
In a statement issued today, the KSU said that, on learning that the fencing work was going on, the pressure groups rushed to the spot, halted construction and chased away the construction workers.
The pressure groups acted as they oppose fencing work that is not on the ‘Zero Line’. By international agreement between India and Bangladesh, any fencing work has to be 150m away from the border.
They maintain that fencing 150m within Indian territory will adversely affect local peoples’ land, especially farmland.
They are also against fencing work when the demarcation of the boundary between the two countries has not been settled.
