A portion of National Highway 6, the arterial road connecting Meghalaya with south Assam, Mizoram and Tripura, has collapsed near Lumshnong in East Jaintia Hills.
The collapse of the highway portion was caused by heavy rains triggered by Cyclone Remal.
Traffic has been stopped on the damaged highway. Cars and trucks were seen stranded on both sides of the highway.
Videos that went viral showed heavy downpour of water from the hilltop onto the collapsed portion of the highway and continuing downstream. The torrents of water also threaten to further destroy the entire highway portion.
Meanwhile, East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal in an order issued today has prohibited all types of vehicular movement through the stretch till restorative works are completed.
Light motor vehicles are being directed to the route of the private road through the Star Cement factory complex.
Baranwal also said that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has been asked to take up immediate restorative measures to ensure that the portion becomes traffic worthy.
