Civil servants and leaders of the Hill Farmers Union (HFU) today inspected the site for the food processing unit at Pahambirlum village, Ri-Bhoi.
District Horticulture Officer F Kharsyntiew inspected the site after the HFU had said that farmers, who mostly grow pineapples, were being exploited by middlemen.
The farmers of Raid Nonglyngdoh, under the banner of the Nonglyngdoh Integrated Village Cooperative Society (NIVCS) want a dedicated collection centre, cold storage facility and food processing unit as Raid Nongkhrah and Nonglyngdoh are famous for their pineapples.
Due to the absence of these facilities and a proper market, the farmer claimed that they were being exploited by middlemen.
Kharsyntiew reportedly assured the farmers that their demands will be considered by the government.
