The candidates of the four political parties that are contesting the Shillong Lok Sabha election on April 19 skipped a debate organised by Ka Sur U Paidbah ka Bri Hynniewtrep on Saturday.
Only the two independent candidates – Lakhon Kma and Peter Challam – attended in person. Jemino Mawthoh, representing the United Democratic Party (UDP), stood in for party candidate Robertjune Kharjahrin.
The discussion dwelt on various issues, such as the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), demand for Inner Line Permit (ILP), interstate boundary dispute and the inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
Kma highlighted the long-pending demand for the inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule but said that it is a mistake to demand the inclusion of both languages simultaneously. Kma stressed that the Khasi language should be given priority as it has numerous books and PhDs published in it unlike the Garo language, which is lagging behind in this aspect.
He suggested that a fresh resolution be made in the state Assembly to include the Khasi language first. The inclusion of the Garo language can then be pursued gradually.
Kma also stated that if central laws such as the CAA conflict with the traditions, language and way of life of the people, the MP must speak up in Parliament.
Challam suggested that any grievances can be addressed in writing to the President of India, who can set up committees via the Union Home Ministry to examine and address the issues.
