Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today said that the journey of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government in its first and second term has been exciting.
Today marks the one year of MDA-II coalition government and also coincides with the sixth year anniversary of the MDA.
“We have seen many challenges and difficulties along the way. But as a team with a lot of coordination and trust and hard work we have been able to overcome some of the challenges and bring the State on a stable and consistent growth that is seen now in the overall economic scenario,” Sangma said.
Sangma strongly feels that in the last six years the foundations that have been laid for the State are going to be important for the next level of growth which is expected to be achieved in the coming years.
Thanking all the colleagues in the ruling alliance and all stakeholders for their support, he said that there will always be challenges and people will not always agree with what the government did even as he said that that is how democracy works.
“A lot more is desired and for me every day is important. I wish not to lose any moment or minute where we can take the State forward and today is the time to recommit ourselves to the State and to its people to take the State forward,” Sangma said.
The chief minister also said that the MDA has not worked on any Common Minimum Programme (CMP) even as he said that the “Mission 10” is in itself a CMP.
He said that most of the areas the government has focussed on have taken a large effort and a number of steps have been put in and other issues which were there in MDA-I are being continued by the present dispensation.
“The commitments we have given in MDA-I those will continue and we continue to achieve the different goals,” Sangma said.
Performance of MDA Govt phenomenal: Paul
Cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh today termed the performance of the MDA-II government as phenomenal.
Referring to the budget presented by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in the recently concluded Assembly session, Lyngdoh said, “You can see through the budget presented we have a very ambitious programme of action that by the end of this government’s tenure Meghalaya would be a $10 billion economy.”
On the various loans taken by the MDA government, Lyngdoh said that the government will certainly nullify those loans by ensuring that there is also revenue generation from them.
Claiming that the CM Elevate programme has seen a boost and good response, Lyngdoh said that departments like the Arts and Culture Department that were always considered minor departments have today been given great focus through setting up of the Tirot Sing library at Dhaka, Tagore cultural complex at Shillong and several other activities.
He further said that tourism is also witnessing a surge in activities with thousands of people directly and indirectly engaged in the tourism sector.
“These are major milestones and achieving them all within a year are worth acknowledging,” he added.
Meanwhile, Lyngdoh said that the State government has instructed the Revenue and Disaster Management Department to conduct a safety audit of all old buildings in the State and complete the audit in a time bound manner.
Informing that the facelift to the State Central Library complex also includes the element of safety, he said the safety audit is expected to be completed within a span of six months.
