The Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has sharply criticised the order passed today by the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills restricting the entry of public transport to Khyndailad and Motphran according to an odd-even rule.
KHNAM vice-president Thomas Passah said that the move has the potential to hurt the incomes of daily wage workers and result in overcrowding of public vehicles.
“It would be better that the odd-even formula be applied to private vehicles instead, as private vehicle owners can still use public transport,” he said.
Instead of a blanket restriction, Passah suggested that the administration should instead look to curb the stacking up of buses and other public vehicles in Khyndailad, which often causes traffic jams.
