Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) Meghalaya has started the Clean India programme in Shillong as part of the month-long nationwide Swachh Bharat campaign.
In line with the pan-India initiative launched on October 1, the Shillong wing of NYKS started the programme in different villages through its youth volunteers and local bodies.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Thakur, launched the campaign on October 1 from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. Thakur had participated in a cleanliness drive on Sangam beach in Prayagraj with Nehru Yuva Kendra, National Service Scheme volunteers and a large number of other people. The Swachhta Pledge was also administered on this occasion.
Swachh Bharat 2022 will be organised in 6 lakh villages across 744 districts in the country through the network of NYKS-affiliated youth clubs and NSS-affiliated institutions.
Twenty-five lakh kilogrammes of waste has been collected in 10 days since the launch of the Swachh Bharat campaign, said the minister in a tweet. The Department of Youth Affairs has set a target of collecting and disposing of 1 crore kilogrammes of plastic waste through Swachh Bharat 2022.
In Shillong, the Dongmusa Umphyrnai and Uplifter Clubs organized the Clean India 2.0 programme at Umphyrnai and Demthring Holy Child Old Age home. The activities relating to Swachh Bharat will continue until October 31.
