The Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) has written to Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Thomas Sangma stating that it has no role to play with regards to the post of the Leader of Opposition.
The letter signed by Mawryngkneng MLA Heavingstone Kharpran, expressed that the party was disturbed with the frequent reports in the media, where the name of the party has been unnecessarily dragged in connection with the appointment of the Leader of Opposition.
“Therefore, I would like to state very clearly that the party had in no way been a party to the decision of your office to appoint the Leader of Opposition,” Kharpran stated in his letter.
According to the VPP, the support of the party’s president Ardent M. Basaiawmoit to Saleng A. Sangma for the post of the Opposition Chief Whip should not be taken as any involvement in the appointment of the Leader of Opposition.
According to the party, the support to Saleng was done in an individual capacity based on his personal request for the same.
It may be mentioned that the post of Leader of Opposition is currently held by Ronnie V. Lyngdoh of the Congress but the party’s strength has dipped to four with the resignation of Saleng following his win in the Tura Lok Sabha election.
The post of Opposition Chief Whip has also fallen vacant after Saleng’s resignation.
There are reports that VPP is keen for the post of Leader of Opposition since it has five MLAs, while both VPP and Congress have four members each.
