Meghalaya’s new Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang will have the strength to resist local political pressure, state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Gregory F Shullai has said.
Nongrang is the first woman to sit in the police chief’s chair in Meghalaya and the latest tribal.
Shullai expressed hope that local values will once again take precedence over outsider influences under her watch.
He also mentioned the challenges she might face, as some may expect her to adhere to old moral standards and replace her if she is not willing to toe the line but he preferred to wait and observe before making any judgments.
Shullai highlighted the difficulties of adhering to moral beliefs within the political system in Shillong, expressing concerns that officers might seek permission from political bosses before taking action.
He hoped that Nongrang would not follow this pattern and would act independently of political influences, despite the potential consequences.
Shullai emphasised the importance of Nongrang instilling pride in the duties of a police officer and adhering to the rules and principles of the force.
