The All Meghalaya Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan School Teachers’ Association (AMSSASTA) has decided to continue with its agitation as its core demand for a 100 percent increase in salary has not been agreed to by the state government.
The association’s members have been staging an indefinite sit-in demonstration for the past nine days to pressure the state government to enhance the salary of over 13,000 SSA teachers in the state, which have remained stagnant for years.
AMSSASTA took out a rally aiming for the Secretariat today with the intention to meet the Chief Minister and Education Minister but both are in Garo Hills in the aftermath of deadly flooding there. Instead, the teachers met with government spokesperson and cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh to apprise him of their demands.
Peter Thyrniang, AMSSASTA president, said that Lyngdoh and the government are aware of the teachers’ demands and that the Education Minister has already submitted a representation to the CM and will again submit a second representation for consideration of the government.
Thyrniang said that Lyngdoh had advised the delegation to also meet the adviser to the Education Department, Himalaya M Shangpliang, but he was not available.
