The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills has passed an order under Section 144 of the CrPC to prohibit unlawful assemblies, holding of public meetings “or any activities as stated thereof”, including the use of loudspeakers, without taking due permission in the 48 hours before the close of polls in the district for the Lok Sabha election.
Meghalaya will vote on April 19.
Election-related activity is banned during the ‘campaign silence period’ under the Representation of the People Act 1951.
Meanwhile, the District Magistrate of West Jaintia Hills also passed a similar order while also including an instruction for political functionaries/party workers/campaign functionaries who are not voters of West Jaintia Hills to leave the district immediately once the campaign period ends today. Exceptions apply to office bearers of political parties who are in charge of the state headquarters during the general election.
All exit polls and opinion polls and the publication, publicity or dissemination of them is banned in print, electronic and social media.
