There is no substantial reason for Meghalaya to have a second capital city, the Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) said today.
KHNAM leader Thomas Passah today said that Garo Hills is not too far away from Shillong and there are no obstacles in travelling to the state capital if the need arises.
“If the demand is made in order to spread economic growth and helps bring about development then we will need to have more capitals in the state, especially in those areas that are lacking in development, like West Khasi Hills, Jaiñtia Hills or Ri-Bhoi,” he said.
On the other hand, the lion’s share of development has been channelled to Garo Hills, Passah claimed.
“If we start to list down the amount of funds from various departments allocated to Garo Hills, we will see that Tura is least deserving to be named as a winter capital based on development,” he said, adding that a dual capital will only further overburden the state’s finances.
