Even as the national highway 6 is now open for traffic, the heavily damaged road in East Jaiñtia Hills has now become dangerous for commuters.
NH-6 links key places in Meghalaya, Assam, Mizoram, Tripura and parts of Manipur. The highway is now restricted to one-way movement as police informed that commuters will experience delays as work to restore portions of the road will continue along with vehicular movement.
The highway has been damaged at multiple locations across the district especially in Ratacherra stretch and near the Lumshnong toll plaza.
Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal informed that heavy vehicles carrying essential commodities are being given priority. “We appeal to the people to avoid all unnecessary journeys across this stretch. The situation remains critical because of the ever-present possibility of another landslide,” he said.
It is to be mentioned that landslides, triggered by incessant rains over the past few of days and have disrupted road communication in several parts of the State and also hit normal life.
