The Siju regional unit of the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has written to the Deputy Commissioner of South Garo Hills seeking the construction of a road to the village of Tolegre from Siju via Nengrugittim as well as medical services to the area.
The memo to the DC was submitted yesterday.
The NGO stated that the people of the above-mentioned areas were suffering due to the lack of a proper road as well the non-availability of medical services. The situation becomes even more critical because, due to the lack of a proper road, villagers face situations that become cases of life and death during medical emergencies.
Though the area has a health sub-centre built in 2010, it lacks manpower as there are no staff to attend cases.
“This is gross negligence of the state government in assisting people from these remote areas and everyone has the right to good medical care. Swift action is required to ensure people are given justice and can lead normal lives like the rest of the state,” said unit president Ralseng Marak.
Tolegre has been one of the most neglected areas in the district, something that speaks volumes of the condition that people are living in.
In its memo, the pressure group has demanded the sanction and construction of a new road through the areas of Siju-Nengrugittim-Tolegre as they believe the people could not be kept without development their entire lives.
