Residents of Wageasi village in North Garo Hills came out in large numbers today morning to condemn the killing of three men in Rongmil, East Garo Hills.
The villagers were also distressed that some reports on social media labelled Wageasi as the site of last week’s murders. They said that such misrepresentation has hurt the sentiments of the residents of Wageasi.
L Momin, a resident who took part in the rally, said that such reports have put Wageasi in a bad light. He added that all communities in Wageasi are living together peacefully.
Momin also said that it was resolved at the rally that the matter will be reported to the cyber crime division of the police.
Three men from neighbouring Goalpara in Assam were reportedly burned alive by unknown suspects on April 16 and their bodies were partially buried.
Police recovered their charred bodies on April 17 and are investigating. The authorities had said that it is likely that the deaths were committed by rival criminals; at least two of the dead were wanted by police in Assam for various criminal offences.
Social organisations from Goalpara and Garo Hills jointly condemned the incident and have sought compensation for the victims’ families.
