A new Garo Hills-centric political party is in the offing but there is still no word on its name or a definitive date for when it will be launched.
The idea for a new party based in Meghalaya’s west was announced in October by social activist Kingstone Marak. Today he said that the process of forming the party was closer to completion as deciding on the name was “in the final stages” and will be declared soon.
Marak has come to prominence in recent times due to the allegations made by him and others regarding corruption in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
The party will contest the upcoming GHADC elections as its main agenda will be “corruption, the need to strengthen the GHADC and demand for more autonomy with more powers and functions and restore it for the betterment of Garo society.”
