Shillong, Dec 30: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has written to Pushkar Singh Dhami, Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, demanding swift action against the perpetrators of the brutal killing of Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old student from Tripura.
In a memorandum, NESO, which represents eight major students’ movements from seven North Eastern states, condemned the December 9 incident in Dehradun where Chakma was beaten and stabbed, allegedly following racial abuse. He succumbed to his injuries on December 26 after struggling for life for over two weeks.
NESO chief Samuel Jyrwa stated that the attack, which also injured Angel’s brother Micheal Chakma, was a result of racial discrimination. “The only reason was they looked different from the rest of the Aryan race and were hurled with racial abuses which were demeaning and degrading,” Jyrwa said.
NESO has demanded capital punishment for the perpetrators, establishment of a special police station to deal with racial discrimination cases and enactment of a stringent anti-racism act.
