NEIGRIHMS has temporarily halted its recruitment process for nurses, following interventions by the Meghalaya government.
This move comes after the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) staged a four-day sit-in at the institute’s administrative block in protest at the institute’s continuation of a recruitment process that the pressure group found to be unsatisfactory. The KSU wants an 80:20 female to male ratio applied in nursing positions at the institute and more jobs for local healthcare workers.
Cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh revealed that a delegation, led by him, will soon meet with the Union Minister of Health to discuss policy matters and issues beyond the control of NEIGRIHMS’ administration; the teaching hospital comes under the central government. The governing council of NEIGRIHMS, chaired by the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, will also take up these issues.
KSU leaders and hospital officials are set to meet tomorrow to iron out differences and create a single draft on recruitment roster issues. The recruitment process will remain halted until all matters are resolved.
The KSU has temporarily suspended its protests, following the state government’s intervention and NEIGRIHMS’ decision to halt recruitment.
The union has also raised concerns about examination centres, citing inconvenience to Meghalaya candidates who must travel to Guwahati, Delhi or other states to sit the computer-based exams that Meghalaya currently does not have the infrastructure for.
